For a century, NVC has been the trusted voice for business, and nowhere is that legacy more evident than in its lasting impact on transportation and infrastructure across the region.
Since the 1920s, NVC has championed investments that connect communities, fuel economic growth, and make Northern Virginia a premier place to live, work, and play. From the earliest days of advocating for better roads to playing an instrumental role in the creation of Dulles International Airport and the Washington Metro system, NVC’s advocacy has helped shape how our region moves and thrives.
A Legacy of Impact
1920s–1930s: NVC successfully lobbied the state for $250,000 to improve secondary roads and led a transformative referendum that influenced Virginia’s road-building policies for generations.
1950s–1960s: Recognizing the region’s potential, NVC played an important role in the development of Dulles International Airport, which continues to drive economic opportunity for Northern Virginia. In 1968, NVC’s support for major bond referenda secured vital funding for local schools, colleges, and the Washington Metro system, which remains the backbone of our region’s mobility today.
1980s: NVC’s commitment to address traffic congestion and building collaboration between business and government remained strong. A 1982 study led by the Chamber resulted in increased state funding for education and technology. In 1986, NVC helped launch the Northern Virginia Transportation Alliance to tackle the region’s toughest transportation challenges with a unified business voice.
2000s–2010s: As a founding partner of MetroNow, NVC helped secure historic regional funding for WMATA, delivering essential repairs and upgrades to keep the system moving.
